THE Australian share market looks set to open around a fifth of a per cent higher following strong gains on global markets and the Dow’s snapping of an eight-session fall.

At 0700 AEST on Monday, the share price futures index was up 13 points, or 0.21 per cent, at 6,180.

Meanwhile, the Australian dollar has risen against its US counterpart after a lower-than-expected output increase agreed by OPEC members helped oil prices lift around four per cent.

The local currency was trading at 74.41 US cents at 0700 AEST on Monday, from 74.04 on Friday.

WORLD FINANCE UPDATE:

VIENNA — A broad range of oil-producing countries has gathered in Vienna to adopt a plan to increase output in order to keep price increases in check, but analysts and markets signalled that they were not impressed.

GODFREYS — Godfreys founder John Johnston will be gifted with the takeover of the vacuum cleaner retailer ahead of his 100th birthday, after securing a more than 91 per cent stake in the group.

QANTAS — Qantas has short-listed nine regional cities, three of them in NSW, as potential homes for its new pilot academy.

ANZ — ANZ shares have jumped at the start of trade after the lender doubled the size of its share buyback program to $3 billion.

APN OUTDOOR — APN Outdoor has increased its bid for rival Here, There Everywhere’s Adshel advertising unit to $540 million.
